Summary:

• Uganda’s Ministry of Water and Environment is inviting eligible bidders to apply to develop 40 solar-powered “packages” for water schemes in a range of locations in the East African country.

In November, Uganda’s Ministry of Water and Environment initiated an auction for developers to construct 40 solar-powered water supply schemes in various locations across the country, as per tender documents.

The projects are divided into four lots:

1. Supply, installation, and commissioning of 10 PV energy packages for water supply schemes in the country’s center.
2. Supply, installation, and commissioning of 10 PV energy packages for water supply schemes in the country’s southwest.
3. Supply, installation, and commissioning of 10 PV energy packages for water supply schemes in the country’s south.
4. Supply, installation, and commissioning of 10 PV energy packages for water supply schemes in the country’s east.

The application deadline for developers is January 17, 2024.

The World Bank has allocated $638 million to support Uganda’s Electricity Access Scale-up Project (EASP), a five-year initiative aiming to provide electricity to households, refugee and host communities, and other dwellings. As of 2021, only 45.2% of Uganda’s 45.85 million population had access to electricity, according to the World Bank.

Uganda had 94 MW of installed PV capacity at the end of the previous year, as reported by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).
