Kampala, Uganda | THE BLACK EXAMINER | The Opposition in parliament has dismissed Speaker Anita Among’s statements from yesterday criticizing opposition Members of Parliament for their boycott. Leader of Opposition, Mathias Mpuuga, addressed journalists at parliament, stating that the Speaker’s remarks were diversionary threats. Mpuuga emphasized that the opposition’s boycott was officially communicated to the speaker’s office.

Yesterday, Speaker Among issued directives against boycotting MPs, suspending various privileges such as travel bans, exclusion from committee meetings, and instructing accountability committees (usually chaired by opposition MPs) to vote for new chairpersons. Mpuuga urged the speaker to remain neutral and address the opposition’s demands regarding human rights violations instead of engaging in games.

Meanwhile, Speaker Among continued issuing warnings to boycotting opposition MPs, emphasizing the 6th day of their absence from plenary. She also asserted that she wouldn’t accept responsibility for actions committed before she became speaker.

On the government side, Government Chief Whip Hamson Obua stated that the government has nothing more to offer to the opposition’s demands beyond what State Minister of Internal Affairs Gen David Muhoozi presented.
