Delegates of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) in the Tooro Sub-region have endorsed the creation of a new political party. This move comes as Dr. Kizza Besigye, one of the founding members of the FDC, calls for collective efforts from various political parties to overthrow the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) government.
Dr. Besigye, during his consultations with FDC members across the seven districts of the Tooro Sub-region, emphasized the need for a united front to combat what he described as a corrupt government. He stated, “The problem affecting all parties, not just the FDC, is the capture of our country, including national institutions, economic institutions, and even non-state institutions. We must unite to return power to the people and ensure free and fair elections.”
Silver Tweyongye, the chairperson of FDC Tooro sub-region, echoed Besigye’s sentiments. He mentioned that the delegates recommended the formation of a new party because the current FDC no longer serves the majority of its supporters’ interests. He explained, “We saw it imperative that for the sake of liberating Uganda, we need a new party. The ruling party has corrupted some of our members, and the existing regime has turned Ugandans into slaves.”
The meeting in Fort Portal City saw delegates unanimously adopting a resolution to form a new party. This decision marks a pivotal moment in Uganda’s political landscape, as Besigye and his supporters seek to rejuvenate the opposition movement.

In his passionate address, Dr. Besigye highlighted the urgency of the struggle beyond just electoral politics. “We must organize a struggle right away. This is not just about elections orchestrated by the ruling party; it’s about liberating Uganda and returning power to its people,” he asserted.
The Tooro Sub-region’s FDC delegates’ decision reflects a broader dissatisfaction within the party ranks, indicating potential shifts in Uganda’s opposition dynamics. Dr. Besigye remains a central figure in this movement, advocating for unity and resilience against what he perceives as a deeply entrenched system of corruption and oppression.
