Police in Obongi District are looking into the circumstances surrounding a policeman’s drowning in the River Nile on Saturday night.
Justin Rubangakene, who was assigned to guard the Obongi ferry along with another officer only known as Mr. Azabo, was identified as the victim.
Ignatius Dragudu, a spokesman for the North West Nile Police, told The Black Examiner that: “When the incident happened, Azabo shot two bullets in the air to alert people that something had happened.”
As investigations continue, it is reported that Officer Azabo is in police custody.
“We arrested him for two reasons. First, we believe that he may have killed Rubangakene, a colleague, and dumped his body in the river. Second, we are detaining him for questioning and security while we work to recover the deceased’s corpse, the police spokesperson continued.
“The incident happened at around 9pm when Rubangakene jumped into the River for unknown reasons,” stated one of the residents who sped to the site but asked to remain unnamed. The ferry chair is where he left his gun.
A quick search for the body was begun by the fishermen and Marine Ambulance rescue team, but as of press time, their efforts had been ineffective.
Officer Rubangakene was in full police uniform when he fell into the water.
Mr Albert Vundru, a businessman said: “This is the impact of depression in life challenges arising from economic hardships which is sweeping this country on daily basis. Government should do something to reduce the burden of economic crisis and we continue witness this kind of issues happening to our people every day.”
Mr Francis Eriga, resident of Obongi town Council, said late Rubangakene was one of the most active and energetic officers at Obongi Central Police Station.
“I last saw him on Wednesday evening on this same ferry. He has been friendly to many in Obongi town. May his soul rest in peace,” Mr Eriga said.
The incident follows a spate of deaths of, especially security men who have been killed and others allegedly committing suicide under unclear circumstances.
