Accountants have been urged to exhibit good ethical values for the proper management of finances and resources.

Speaking at an event where the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Uganda (ICPAU) unveiled the 5th cohort of the students’ scholarship program, Ruth Doreen Mutebe, Chairperson African Federation of Institutes of Internal Auditors (AFIIA) Uganda, noted that accountants are the stewards of resources and finances, so it is important to protect these finances for the good of the nation.

Mutebe who was also the guest of honor told the 10 shortlisted beneficiaries to embrace technology because of the changing trends in the accountancy industry. She noted that currently most of the companies and accounting firms are working online through different programs that have been developed for quick service delivery.

Josephine Okui Ossiya, the first female president of ICPAU told candidates to use the scholarship obtained to study and complete the course within the specified period of 2 and a half years so that they can use the knowledge obtained to create jobs for others.

She also noted that accountancy is a practical course, urging the candidates to do more research and prepare for everything they are to study so as to pass, differing from their universities given by the education system which teaches students only to cram.

The Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Uganda (ICPAU) scholarship program was started in 2019 with 10 students who applied for the program from Ugandan universities.

So far the institute has supported 50 students to attain a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) certification.

Ronald Mutumba, the vice president of CPA told URN that the scholarship program is aimed at attracting young talented persons into accountancy as a social corporate responsibility of the institute.

Based on the student’s academic excellence, beneficiaries can use the opportunity to grow their talents and become better accountants.

The beneficiaries of the 5th cohort have been shortlisted from Universities of Gulu, Bugema, Kyambogo, Uganda Christian University, Mbarara, MUBS, Kisubi and Kabale.

The scholarship covers registration fees, annual studentship renewal, examination fees and  study material.
