Summary:
- The MK Movement, now known as the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), underwent rebranding at a well-attended event at its Kololo headquarters. Michael Mawanda, the Movement’s spokesperson, declared that PLU aims to foster a renewed spirit of good citizenship.
Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba is facing legal action for alleged failure to adhere to proper procedures in rebranding his MK Movement. Maverick attorney Hassan Male Mabirizi is initiating the lawsuit, contending that the Movement should have been registered with the Electoral Commission.
The MK Movement, now known as the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), underwent rebranding at a well-attended event at its Kololo headquarters. Michael Mawanda, the Movement’s spokesperson, declared that PLU aims to foster a renewed spirit of good citizenship.
However, Lawyer Mabirizi decried the rebranding as “criminal” and in violation of sections 56 and 57 of the Penal Code Act. He insists that the organization should have been registered with the Electoral Commission, not the Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB).
“We cannot allow that criminality to take place because registration of political organizations and activities falls with the Electoral Commission and not with URSB,” he said.

“The EC has clear guidelines under the Political Parties and Organisations Act; there are benchmarks and principles. You therefore don’t wake up one morning and go to URSB to rebrand a company into a political outfit.”
He further threatened to pursue a criminal case against Mercy Kainobwisho, the Registrar General of URSB, questioning her role in allowing a private company to transform into a political organization. It’s worth noting, however, that PLU’s declaration explicitly states that they are not a political entity.
“We commit to ensuring that the Patriotic League of Uganda’s efforts towards reviving patriotism will remain non-partisan, non-denominational and non-sectarian,” the documents read.
Meanwhile, Lawyer Mabirizi has another ongoing lawsuit against Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba in the Soroti High Court, alleging “scandalous conduct, conduct prejudicial to good order, and being a common nuisance.”
This lawsuit stems from an incident where Gen Muhoozi, along with Speaker Anita Among, Ministers, MPs, and other supporters, allegedly unlawfully conducted and addressed a public rally in Kachumba Sub County, Bukedea District.
