Kampala, Uganda | THE BLACK EXAMINER | Ms. Alice Alaso, the Secretary General of the Alliance for National Transformation (ANT) party, has called on the Electoral Commission to expedite the process of displaying the roadmap for the Local Council elections. Her aim is to encourage women to participate in the pending election process.

Ms. Alaso expressed her concerns, stating that the absence of an election roadmap has hindered their efforts to promote women’s engagement. She made these remarks during the handover of leadership of the Interparty Women Platform (IWOP) from the ANT party to the Democratic Party (DP) at a ceremony held at ANT’s offices in Kampala.

IWOP, a coalition of ten registered political parties, seeks to create an effective platform for women to influence political culture and promote the overall well-being of society through rotational leadership. The parties in this platform include the National Resistance Movement, DP, ANT, Uganda People’s Congress, Ecological Party of Uganda, Forum for Democratic Change, Justice Forum, Peoples’ Progressive Party, Uganda Federal Alliance, and the Conservative Party.

It’s important to note that the Electoral Commission had disowned a program that was claimed to be the approved schedule for the election of LC 1, LC II, and women councils. Unfortunately, efforts to obtain a comment from the Electoral Commission’s spokesperson, Mr. Paul Bukenya, were unsuccessful at the time of this report.

The term of office for Local Council I and II expired on July 10. However, an extension of six months was granted to the incumbents of these offices as the government sought resources to facilitate the exercise. The Prime Minister, Ms. Robinah Nabbanja, recently stated that the government requires Shs59 billion for the elections.
