Uganda Cranes secured their second win in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, defeating South Sudan 1-0 at the Mandela National Stadium on Friday. Bevis Mugabi’s header early in the second half sealed the win in front of a packed home crowd.
The victory gives Uganda a crucial advantage ahead of the return leg in Juba on October 15. With this result, Uganda moves to seven points, tying with South Africa in the qualifiers.
Despite a lackluster first half, Uganda’s tactical changes after halftime paid off, with Mugabi capitalizing on a rebound to find the back of the net. South Sudan pushed for an equalizer, but Uganda held firm, with Ssemugabi and Omedi coming close to extending the lead.
Uganda’s coach acknowledged a slow start but praised the team’s second-half performance, while South Sudan’s coach commended his side’s resilience despite the loss. Uganda now sets its sights on another win in Juba to edge closer to AFCON qualification.
Meanwhile, Botswana and DR Congo also claimed crucial victories in their respective qualifiers, while Ghana was held to a frustrating goalless draw by Sudan.
