Experts ask Gov’t to negotiate with ADF

Saturday, July 15, 2023

Experts have urged the government to consider peace negotiations as a viable solution following President Museveni’s address regarding the ADF and their recent attack on a school in Kasese. The attack resulted in the tragic deaths of over 43 individuals, including students.

President Museveni acknowledged the weakness of the ADF and expressed confidence that Uganda, in collaboration with neighboring countries, can eradicate the group through a combination of military, intelligence, and diplomatic strategies.

However, Dr. Arthur Bainomugisha, a commentator on the president’s speech, argued that after numerous unsuccessful attempts to defeat the rebels, it is essential to explore peaceful avenues for resolution. He believes that pursuing peaceful means is a reasonable approach.

Contrarily, Fred Egesa, a security analyst, maintains that negotiating peace with an international terrorist group is unrealistic. He emphasizes the necessity of eliminating them through military operations.

During his speech on Thursday, the president acknowledged intelligence failures as a contributing factor to the attack. Nevertheless, experts view it positively that the commander-in-chief is now aware of the security forces’ shortcomings, and they hope that appropriate measures will be implemented to address the issue.
