NRM membership register update ongoing, few turn-up in Luwero

 The Update of the National Resistance Movement party register has kicked off amidst low turn-up in Luwero district.

The exercise which is being conducted across the villages in the country will run from Wednesday 13th-Sunday 17th March 2024.  The party seeks to register new supporters from the age of 16 and above as well as update particulars of those already in the register.

However, in Luwero district the exercise kicked off with few people turning up and names for members in the registers of 17 villages were missing.

Margaret Nakanjako Meeme, the NRM Registrar for Kasoma zone in Luwero town says that by midday at least 200 out of 600 voters in the register had turned up to update their particulars and five new members registered.

Nakanjako says that the turnout is considerably good and hopes to attract more members in subsequent days.

But at Kalongo zone in Luwero town, Sudat Nabukeera the NRM village registrar said that by midday only nine new members had been registered.

Nabukeera further noted that the party register had no single names of members within the village and they have decided to register them afresh.

George William Namugera, the NRM Chairperson of Kakookolo village in Luwero town says that 15 new members had been registered and 13 out of 409 members checked their particulars.

Namugera asked the NRM Party Secretariat t publicize the exercise through local megaphones to attract more people to register.

David Kamugisha, the Luwero District NRM Registrar says the first has been largely successful and they hope to attract more members for the exercise ithe n the upcoming days.

Kamugisha says that they have received reports from 17 villages where the names of all members were missing and have since directed the registrars to register them afresh.

Kamugisha adds that they also have a case where the register for one village wasn’t delivered and they have since notified the secretariat to deliver it immediately to enable them to register the members.

Kamugisha has asked the supporters to take the exercise seriously and update their particulars which include age because this will be used to extract data for elections of special interest groups.

In 2021, there were 257,115 voters in Luwero district and the majority voted for opposition candidates in either Presidential or Parliamentary elections.

Rosemary Namayanja, the Deputy Secretary General of the National Resistance Movement Party made visits to Gombe A zone in Nansana municipality, Wakiso district and Agakhan in Kampala Central Division to assess the progress of the update exercise.

Namayanja said the turnout was promising and asked the members to embrace the exercise across the country within the set five days.
