Kampala, Uganda | THE BLACK EXAMINER | Last week saw a significant surge in road accidents in Uganda, with 405 crashes resulting in 395 victims, including 77 deaths and 318 injuries. In response to these distressing incidents, the Ugandan police have reintroduced Operation Fika Salama, aiming to raise road safety awareness.
Traffic Police spokesperson, Kananura Michael, announced that this renewed campaign will include defensive driving training for taxi and bus drivers. Additionally, it will prioritize the promotion of proper helmet usage among Boda Boda riders in Kampala.
The urgent need for this campaign is highlighted by recent tragic events. On November 3, a devastating accident in Mayuge along the Jinja-Iganga highway claimed nine lives. The following day, on November 4, another tragic incident occurred on the same route in Namasoga, resulting in the loss of six lives.
With the relaunch of Operation Fika Salama, authorities are making concerted efforts to reduce the escalating number of road accidents and instill safer road practices, especially as the festive season approaches.
