Bulo Marer, Somalia | THE BLACK EXAMINER | The Joint Forces of the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), led by the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces, have taken proactive measures to address potential flooding in Bulo Marer, Somalia, ahead of expected heavy rains.
This support includes the use of a bulldozer provided to the district disaster management committee to address concerns related to the upcoming El Niño rains in the Lower Shabelle region. On October 18, 2023, the district disaster management committee, recognizing the urgency of the situation, sought assistance from ATMIS forces and other humanitarian agencies to open water channels before the onset of heavy rains.
Mr. Muhidin Kharif Alio, Deputy District Commissioner and head of the district disaster management committee, expressed his appreciation for ATMIS’s swift response to their request, highlighting the importance of these efforts in enhancing the drainage system to prevent potential floods.
Maj Don Naijuka emphasized the necessity of clearing drainage channels early to prevent blockages and allow floodwaters to flow freely. Failing to establish a proper drainage system, he explained, could result in flooding, property damage, and associated health risks. Therefore, ATMIS has intervened to mitigate these potential issues.
Additionally, ATMIS joint forces, in collaboration with Somali Security Forces and the local community, have worked to reopen water collection points, wells, and dams in Bulo Marer town. They have also cleared surrounding areas of bushes and collected debris to reduce the risk of waterborne disasters.
