Lwengo Leaders Appeals to Opposition Leaders for Help with Ailing School Infrastructure

Lwengo, Uganda | THE BLACK EXAMINER | Lwengo district leadership has reached out to the opposition leadership in parliament, seeking their assistance in enhancing the learning environment in government schools. District Chairperson Ibrahim Kitatta, emphasizing the poor condition of government schools, mentions substandard classroom structures, insufficient staff quarters, and the absence of latrines and safe water sources, posing health risks to students and teachers.

The dire situation affects several schools, including Lyakabirizi COPE, Kalagala COPE, Nakateete, Bijaaba, Kyanjovu, and Kyakatuuro primary schools, where classes are often conducted under makeshift shelters, rendering education impossible during rainy or sunny conditions.

Kitatta acknowledges the district’s unsuccessful attempts to address these issues due to limited budget allocations. During an oversight tour by the Leader of Opposition in Parliament, Mathias Mpuuga Nsamba, Kitatta presented a report detailing the situation.

The district has also informed the Ministry of Education and Sports about the challenges but is yet to receive a solution. They now look to the Leader of Opposition’s inspection tour to draw attention to their predicament during government planning processes.

To mitigate the situation, the district has mobilized parents and communities, but their efforts have resulted in improvised shelters. For instance, at Lyakabirizi Cope Primary School in Kyazanga Sub-county, 512 students share only two classrooms and a five-stance latrine, with lower primary classes under a makeshift grass-thatched shade.

Kitatta points out that this distressing scenario affects approximately 26 government primary schools, mostly situated in rural areas, qualifying them for special consideration as hard-to-reach facilities.

Mpuuga promises to prioritize the neglected schools, urging the government to address these issues and improve the education sector. He also encourages the Lwengo district Education Department to petition the Committee on Education and Sports to gain support for urgent improvements in the schools, ultimately benefiting the students.
